The German seven-day COVID-19 incidence rate continues to increase since setting a record and rising above 200 for the first time on Monday. Early on Wednesday, data compiled by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) showed that the rate, which measures the number of people infected per 100,000, has risen to 232.1 to reach its highest level since the pandemic began. The nationwide death toll increased to 96,963 in the meantime, with another 236 fatal outcomes attributed to the virus, while the total number of infections rose by 39,676 to 4,844,054.

France extends COVID-19 booster shots, requires them for health pass

PARIS (Reuters) – French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday that those aged 65 and older will need to present proof of a COVID-19 booster shot from mid-December for health passes that give access to restaurants, trains and planes to remain valid.

Besides, the third shot, so far available only for people older than 65 and the vulnerable, will from early December also be available for the 50-64 age group, Macron said in a televised address.

“Since the end of summer, a campaign has been launched to protect people over 65 as well as the most fragile among us. Today we must accelerate,” Macron said.

COVID-19 hospitalizations rising in parts of California, a potentially ominous sign…. BARK BARK BARK

COVID-19 hospitalizations have risen significantly in the Inland Empire and Central Valley, bringing new concerns about whether the shift represents a precursor to a wider spike in COVID-19 in California as the winter holidays approach. Across the state, both cases and hospitalizations hit a plateau after months of decline. Hospitalizations have remained fairly flat in some areas with relatively high vaccination rates, including the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles County. But in some areas with lower vaccination rates, such as Riverside, San Bernardino and Fresno counties, conditions are deteriorating, with hospitalizations up by more than 20% in recent weeks. And even some places with relatively high vaccination rates are seeing COVID-19 hospitalizations tick upward; in Orange County, COVID-19 hospitalizations are up by 16% since Halloween.

Health officials have been warning about a potential new rise in COVID-19 in California as seniors who got their shots last winter — and haven’t received a booster shot — may start to see their immunity wane, leaving them exposed to greater risk for infection and hospitalization, and as people gather indoors more as the weather cools and the holidays approach. German coronavirus infection rate hits highest since pandemic began… Russia’s COVID death toll up by record 1,211… Dutch hospitals urge new measures as COVID-19 cases near record… BARK BARK BARK

Germany’s coronavirus infection rate has risen to its highest level since the start of the pandemic, public health figures showed on Monday, and doctors warned they will need to postpone scheduled operations in coming weeks to cope. The seven-day incidence rate – the number of people per 100,000 to be infected over the last week – rose to 201.1, higher than a previous record of 197.6 in December last year, the figures from the Robert Koch Institute showed on Monday. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 4,782,546 from 4,767,033 a day earlier. The number of deaths increased by 33 to a total of 96,558. Bavaria state premier Markus Soeder called for more decisive action in view of the new peak in the incidence rate. More needs to be done “than a little compulsory testing in old people’s homes”, he told Deutschlandfunk radio. He called for tests to be offered free of charge again, vaccination centres to be reactivated and for states and the federal government to coordinate their strategies. Germany has abolished free testing to incentivise people to get shots. Christian Karagiannidis, scientific director at the DIVI association for intensive and emergency medicine, said an expected rise in coronavirus cases in coming weeks meant some scheduled operations would have to be postponed. “We will only be able to cope with the burden of all emergencies if savings are made somewhere else, though definitely not with surgical cancer treatments,” he told the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper. Germany has already had to relocate some patients from regions with overburdened hospitals. The three German parties working to agree on a coalition government by early December will present proposals to combat a fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country on Monday, daily newspaper Die Welt said. Five Mutations Present in Delta Plus COVID-19 Variant…

Structural changes to the COVID-19 virus highlight the need to expand the research efforts.

Five specific mutations are more prevalent in the Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 compared to the Delta variant, according to the results of a new study published in the Journal of Autoimmunity. “Whether it is natural antibodies produced from previously having COVID-19 or the antibodies produced from the vaccine, we are showing structurally how dangerous and clever the virus is by being able to mutate in a way that the antibodies don’t seem to recognize and defend against these new variants,” Austin Spratt, an undergraduate student at University of Missouri (MU), said in a press release.

Europe faces growing COVID-19 resurgence despite vaccination progress…… BARK BARK BARK

Infections in Europe are returning to high levels as winter takes hold – prompting debate on whether curbs will need to be introduced in the lead-up to Christmas. Dr Edward Kelly. a former Director of Integrated Health Services at the WHO, says the success of vaccination programs means many people believe the threat of COVID is gone, and are no longer practicing the basic public health measures needed to keep the virus under control. Global COVID-19 cases hit 250 million, eastern Europe infections at record levels

Nov 8 (Reuters) – Global COVID-19 cases surpassed 250 million on Monday as some countries in eastern Europe experience record outbreaks, even as the Delta variant surge eases and many countries resume trade and tourism. The daily average number of cases has fallen by 36% over the past three months, according to a Reuters analysis, but the virus is still infecting 50 million people every 90 days due to the highly transmissible Delta variant. By contrast, it took nearly a year to record the first 50 million COVID-19 cases. Health experts are optimistic that many nations have put the worst of the pandemic behind them thanks to vaccines and natural exposure, although they caution that colder weather and upcoming holiday gatherings could increase cases. “We think between now and the end of 2022, this is the point where we get control over this virus … where we can significantly reduce severe disease and death,” Maria Van Kerkhove, an epidemiologist leading the World Health Organisation, told Reuters on Nov. 3.
